During the early morning of 10 Thermidor (28 July), soldiers of the Convention entered the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, where Robespierre was signing a decree calling the Commune to arms. Hearing the arrival of the troops, Le Bas committed suicide with a pistol. Robespierre had reportedly tried to do the same, but the bullet shattered his jaw, leaving him badly wounded. At 9 a.m. Robespierre, Saint-Just and Couthon were brought before the Revolutionary Tribunal, which sentenced them to be executed that same day by guillotine. Robespierre wounded. Drawing by H.
