The U.S. Martines and the Navy bombers at work against Japanese in Solomon Islands.The U. S. Martines now hold six islands in the Solomon group north of Australia. They took them from the Japanese in three weeks of struggle. The U.S.Losses, which included a destroyer, were described as "moderate." The Japanese lost upwards of 100 planes in this and related operations, sufferea hits on one battleship, two carriers, one cruiser and the destroyer.The operations began August 7 under the command of vice admiral Robert L.Ghormley. With surprise completely effective, the Marines, under cover of a terrific naval barrage, stormed ashore at Tulagi and Guadalcanal. The Japs fled to the hills. The Guadalcanal and crushed resistance on Gavutu, Tanambogo, Makambo and parts of Florida Island. November 23, 1942.
