The Lion of Chaeronea was erected after the battle of Chaeronera (338 B.C), between the forces of Phillip II of Macedon and the combined forces of the Athenians, Thebans, Corinthians, and their allies. Phillip II won. According to Pausanias, the lion was erected by the Thebans to commemorate their fallen. Under the monument, archaeologists unearthed a mass grave of 254 people, now identified as members of the military unit known as The Sacred Band of Thebes. The term acropolis means high city in Greek and can refer to one of many natural strongholds constructed on rocky, elevated ground in Greece, but the Acropolis of Athens is the best known. Mount Parnassus is a mountain range of central Greece.
