U.S. Liberator Over Vesuvius A B-24 Liberator bomber of the U.S. Army Air Forces circles above the snow-covered slopes of Mount Vesuvius. The Liberator is the famous "Blue Streak" on a mission over Italy after completing 1,058 hours of combat flying during which her gunners brought down 23 enemy fighters without loss of any member of the crew, although her frame is pitted with flak holes. The "Blue Streak" has now returned to the United States for a tour of industrial war plants. March 1, 1944.
