Letter From America (December) -- At dusk each Christmas Eve, whether he is in Washington or in Independence, Missouri, the President lights the Community Christmas Tree on the South lawn of the White House. The ceremonies are witnessed by several thousand persons, many of them children. If he is in Independence, the President lights the tree by pressing a button that sets off the 800 glittering lights 1,000 miles away. The tree is a symbol of all community Christmas trees in the United States. October 11, 1949.
