Largest Post-War Liner Launched -- The shipyard workers of Vickers-Armstrong watch the result of months of their labour as the new liner Orcades slides into the water following the launching at Barrow-in-Furness today (Tuesday).The 31,000-ton liner Orcades, built for the Orient line by Vickers-Armstrong Limited, and which is the biggest merchant ship to be launched in any country since the end of the war, successfully went down the slipways at Barrow-in-Furness, Lancs, today (Tuesday). The launching ceremony was performed by Lady Morshead, wife of Lieut-Gen. Sir Leslie Morshead, manager of the Orient Line. The Orcades is intended for the Australian run, and will carry 1,560 passengers with cargo and mail. October 14, 1947.
