Landscape with wind and rain., Franciscus Milatz, artist, 1784-1808, Netherlands, etching, Franciscus Andreas Milatz (1763-1808) was a landscape and city painter, draughtsman and printmaker who spent most of his life in Haarlem. Together with his near contemporary Hermanus Fock - who is currently represented in three etchings in Te Papa's collection - Milatz became one of the leading lights in the Haarlem school of landscape artists which was at its most active around 1800. These artists took their inspiration from their 17th-century predecessors, in particular Jacob van Ruisdael and Meindert Hobbema, and also, like those artists, from the actual landscape in the immediate surroundings of Haarlem.
