Landscape with Figure early 16th century The Veneto This sketch is an important early example of landscape drawing in Italian art. In solitary meditation, the diminutive figure of a male saint (possibly Jerome or John) is seated in the foreground on a rocky plateau above an expansive landscape with villages along the coastline. The composition has parallels in northern Italian and northern European paintings and drawings of the late fifteenth and early sixteenth century. The artists identity remains uncertain, but scholars have associated the drawing with several Venetian masters working at the turn of the sixteenth century.. Landscape with Figure 459423
