Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded in 1430 by Phillip III the Good, duke of Burgundy. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the apostle St. Andrew. Phillip's son Charles decreed that the order's mantle, habit and chaperon (hood) be of crimson velvet lined with white satin. The golden fleece was suspended from a thick necklace, later decorated with expensive diamonds (against the order's rules).. Handcolored copperplate engraving of a knight from a religious military order from Robert von Spalart's "Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages" (1796).
