Kneller, Gottfried, Smith, John (printmaker, publisher), Portrait John (Johannes) Smith, Portrait of John Smith (1652-1743), an ambitious mezzotint engraver and print publisher. Between 1683 and 1729 he produced over 300 mezzotints. It was mainly the paintings of the portrait painter Godfried Kneller that he reproduced in mezzotint (over 113). In 1694 he engraved Kneller's self-portrait and in response Kneller painted the portrait of Smith in 1696. To emphasize their special bond, Kneller painted the engraver's portrait print of 1694 in his hand.
