In June 1842 a proclamation was issued announcing that a large prportion of the gold coinage in Britain had become worn and devalued and was below its prescribed weight of five penny weights, 2 and a half grains. Exact balances were devised by John Bate and others to rectify the situation and all light sovereigns were cut and melted down. Date: 1845
