Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, The Fighting Temeraire, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This work, title Norham Castle, is one of the most beautiful impressionistic Turners that were removed from the cellars of the National gallery in 1906, and hung in the Turner Room at Millbank. Once, when passing Norham Castle, Turner took off his hat to the ruins. His companion asked why. Turner replied, "I made a drawing or painting of Norham Castle several years since. It took, and from that day to this I have had as much to do as my hands could execute.
