Joseph Mallord William Turner (1785-1851) was a British Romantic, landscape painter, water colorist, and printmaker. It is said that his style lay the foundation for the movement known as Impressionism. His paintings number in the thousands. Among his best-known works are A Ship Aground, The Fighting Temeraire, Arth from the Lake of Zug, and Lausanne. This work, titled Hastings, is on eof the so-called "unfinished" picutres that, after half a century in the cellars of the Ntional Gallery, were removed to the Tate Galley and put on exhibition in 1906. This great "find," as it was called, of 21 Turners was the sensation of the year in art circles. Hastings was a favorite subject with Turner.
