Sutherland (center), Chief of Staff to U.S. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (behind microphones), Supreme Allied Commander, and other Allied military officers. The capitulation ceremonies took place aboard the U.S. battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay, south of the Japanese capital, on Sept. 1, 1945. June 9, 1945.
