Irish-American lawyer, Andrew McReynolds, was commissioned as a Colonel by President Abraham Lincoln on June 15, 1861. He had raised and was assigned command of the 1st New York (Lincoln) Cavalry. It was the first Union regiment of volunteer cavalry organized during the US Civil War.
