Fought outside the town, it helped stop the German army from advancing toward Paris and, despite heavy casualties, represented a major victory for Allied forces. French and American troops succeeded despite gas and artillery attacks, aerial bombardment, and bad weather, aided by tanks and advance warning about German plans gleaned from captured soldiers. Eby's seemingly endless row of soldiers emphasizes the sheer number of combatants.
