Illustration showing the assassination of Gauleiter Burckel, the Governor of Pawiak Prison, Warsaw, 7th September 1943. Burckel had been tried, in absentia, by the Polish Underground for his collaboration with the Nazi occupiers. The assassination was carried out by a Polish Underground soldier disguised as a street violinist. This drawing was made by Captain Bryan de Grineau, under the direction of an officer of the Polish Underground Army. 1944
