This 1915 illustration by American artist Evelyn Paul shows Egyptians hauling stones for pyramid building. Research shows that pyramids were located close to quarries to get the stone needed for the core of the pyramid. Some block were taken overland, as shown here; others, coming longer distances, were brought by boat. At the pyramid site, ramps were most likely used and the stone blocks dragged up the ramps, perhaps on sledges as pictured here. Wheeled transport was not yet available.
