Iban Tracker Wins George Cross In Malaya: The George Cross has been awarded to Awang ahak Rawang, an Iban tracker serving with the Security Forces in Malaya, "for coolness, fortitude and offensive spirit of the highest order" when a patrol of the Worcestershire Regiment was ambushed by fifty bandits. In spite of being wounded severely twice, he stayed on to continue the fight and protected a wounded soldier. Awang is 28 years old and is the son of Rawang - a pensioner of the Sarawak Police. Before becoming a tracker with the Security Forces in Malaya, Awang was an Iban farmer at Skrang, Simanggang, in the Second Division of Sarawak. When permission was granted for Ibans to join the Security Forces in Malaya as jungle trackers he tried to enlist but was unsuccessful. March 27, 1952. (Photo by British Official Photograph).
