Hwaseong Fortress or Suwon Hwaseong is a fortification surrounding the centre of Suwon, the provincial capital of Gyeonggi-do, in South Korea. It was built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of Joseon (1752 - 1800), the 22nd ruler of the Joseon Dynasty of Korea. After succeeding his grandfather, King Yeongjo, he made various attempts to reform and improve the nation. The map is from Hwaseong-seongyeok-ui-gwae ordered for publication by King Jeongjo in order to spread the processes of a whole fortress' construction. It was published in 1801. Jeongjo died a year before the publication of the book.
