Horyuji Temple - Buddhism, following its introduction to Japan, in the 13th year of Emperor Kirmei (552 A.D.), gave an impetus to and greatly influenced the fine arts and architecture of the country. A monument to the architectural expression of that period is the Horyuji Temple in Nara Prefecture, which has withstood the ravages of time since its building 1,333 years ago. Its design of poetic simplicity as well as construction and technique are considered original Japanese creations. March 5, 1941. (Photo by Japan Photo Library).
