Home in a Hole in the Wall:A hole in the wall is home for many destitute Italians. Even the slums of the capital, dirty before the war and dirtier since, are elegant compared to the homes crudely constructed in and near the bomb-broken ancient wall of the city. Typical of the holed - in homes is this one, in the doorway of which stands Mrs. Carmela Mendardi. Five of her seven children are at left. At right are the Bracchis: Rita, Lucia and Gino. Both Bracchi and the father of the seven children are unemployed. Appropriations for the relief of the poverty-striken families are helping unbalance the Italian budget. December 8, 1947.
