King John I ordered its construction to commemorate the Portuguese victory in the Battle of Aljubarrota on 14 August 1385. In 1388, work was begun by the architect Alfonso Domingues (ca. 1330-1402). Its construction was completed in 1517, requiring the participation of several architects over the years. Engraving.
