Hartnell Designs Alternative Coronation Dress for Peeresses -- Some of the series of head coverings. Regulations in the London Gazette state: Ladies attending the Coronation wearing afternoon dress must wear a head covering. This must not cover the face, but should be in the form of a veil falling from the crown or the back of the head as far as the shoulders, but not lower than the waistline. Any colour excepting black can be used and should be made in a suitably light material such as tulle, chiffon, organise or lace and may be attached by a comb, jewelled pins flowers or ribbon bows, but not with feathers. Mr. Norman Hartnall , the Royal dressmaker, has, at the request of the Karl Marshal's Office, designed the alternative dress which may be worn at the Coronation by Viscountesses and Baronesses who are not in possession of Robes of State and coronets together with kirtles and Coronation dress.
