On Guard (Third Of Eight) -- George Donnet, 20, of Valais, Switzerland, is a picture of quiet pride as he takes the oath of allegiance with 16 other men who were sworn in as members of the Vatican's Swiss Guard this year. The Swiss Guard was founded in 1505 by Pope Julius II, who chose those nationals because they were among the most courageous soldiers in the world. The annual ceremony is held each May 6th, to mark the date of a famous battle during which the Swiss Guardsmen distinguished themselves while defending Rome. December 23, 1955.
