Gold Mining In Fiji -- One of the native villages at the goldfields.Gold mining, the Colony's second largest industry, was begun in 1935. The two principal companies operating are The Emperor and The Loloma. Fijians provide 75% of the labour on the goldfield and many of them have become skilled mineworkers. Special attention has been paid by the mining companies to the welfare of their employees. Living accommodation of a high standard has been provided, extensive playing fields laid out and community halls have been built. The industry suffered a temporary setback owing to labour and equipment shortage during the latter part of the war. The peak year of production being 1941 when a yield of 119,000 ozs. was obtained.
