Gigli sings in a London organ Loft -- Italians - many of them from the poorer parts of London packed St. Peter's Italian church, Clerkenwell, yesterday for high Mass. Some of them stood in the aisles. And from the organ loft, during the service, they heard the glorious voice of Beniamino Gigli, Gigli's sercretary, Mr. Giovanni listened carefully during the service. For the great tenor was singing at London's Albert Hall last night and both he and Gigli were worried about the effect of the damp weather on the singer's throat. Mr. F. O. Stephens, organist and choirmaster at St. Peter's, said "Before the service Mr. Gigli asked for a cup of tea, and after he had sung with my choir of two dozen men and women who sing in the organ loft, one of our singers, Miss Giacynta Caira, gave him a cough lozenge - for which he seemed grateful". "I was a little nervous myself, as I had rehearsed with him for only about a quarter of an hour on Saturday". October 24, 1949. (Photo by Daily Mirror).
