General Abdel Kerim Kassem (sometimes known as Abd al-Karim Qasim) walks to his office with a Sten gun in his hand. Kassem emerged as Prime Minister of Iraq following the overthrow of King Faisal II and the royal family in the coup d'etat of 14 July 1958. He remained as leader of the country until his own overthrow in August 1963 by Abdul Salam Arif. Following a brief trial, Kassem was executed. July 1958
