Front cover of the very first copy of the Illustrated London News, published May 14th, 1842. Founded by Herbert Ingram, who anticipated demand for a newspaper containing illustrations, the paper was an instant succeess, selling 26,000 copies in the face of competition from 400 newspapers in the country. A true innovation, the ILN laid the foundation stone for picture-led journalism of the future. Date: 1842
