The deputy Jean-Bertrand Féraud (1759-1795), in charge of supplies in Paris, tried to hold back the crowd while waiting for the National Guard to arrive, but a woman shot him, killing him on the spot. The enraged crowd cut off Féraud'\''s head, nailing it to a pike and carrying it to the Convention chamber.
