French Revolution of 1848. The Parisians took up arms on 23 and 24 February 1848, leading to the abdication of King Louis-Philippe I (1773-1850) in favour of his nine-year-old grandson, Philippe of Orléans (1838-1894), Count of Paris, and the appointment of his daughter-in-law, Helene of Mecklenburg-Schwerinn (1814-1858), Duchess of Orléans, as regent. On the afternoon of the same day, 24 February, accompanied by her two sons (the Count of Paris and the Duke of Chartres) and her brother-in-law Louis d'Orléans, Duke of Nemours, the Duchess of Orléans appeared before the National Assembly for the investiture of her son as the new King of France and the official proclamation of her regency. The National Assembly rejected the proclamations and decided to form a provisional government presided over by Dupont de l'Eure.
