At Fontenoy (also spelled Fontenay and Fontenet), a village in north central France, in July of A.D. 841, Charles II of France and Louis the German, both grandsons of Charlemagne, defeated their brother Emperor Lothair I. The battle, pictured in this early 20th-century illustration, led to the Treaty of Verdun in 843, which partitioned the Frankish Empire between the three brothers, all sons of Louis I (son of Charlemagne).
