Following the breakdown of negotiations to seek recompense for the Namamugi Incident in September 1862, and having been surprised by cannon fire from the shore, ships of the British Royal Navy bombard the Japanese town of Kagoshima. The ships involved were HMS Euryalus; HMS Pearl; HMS Coquette; HMS Argus; HMS Perseus; HMS Racehorse and the gunboat HMS Havoc.
