The Face Of South Africa - Much of the fruit for which South Africa is famous comes from the Cape Province, where fertile valleys, rich in vineyards and orchards, lie peacefully in the sunshine below cowering mountains. Peaches, apricots, melons, figs. pears and grapes are grown here. and exported fresh, canned and dried in huge quantities. In 1939 over 82,000 tons of fresh deciduous fruit and over 268,000 tons of citrus fruit was exported. Grape cultivation, introduced by the French Huguenot settlers, has led to South Africa's wine production. August 26, 1948.
