HMS 'Windsor Castle' had first been launched in 1849, but was lengthened and had engines fitted in 1852, thus becoming the longest three-deck warship in the world. Later that year, she was re-named HMS 'Duke of Wellington' in memory of the famous general. She served as the Baltic flagship during the Crimean war, then as flagship of the Commander in Chief Portsmouth.
