Zenobe Theophile Gramme (1826-1901) built the first successful dynamo in 1869, incorporating a ring-wound armature ('Gramme ring'), which after various improvements, he manufactured in 1871. It was the first electric generator to be used commercially, for electroplating as well as electric lighting. Date: November 2nd 1878
