Dusk on the Thames Embankment on a cold, clear December night - the pavement wet, certainly but no longer hidden by a pea-souper.Dusk on a cold, dry new year's Eve. The glow of Embankment lamps sets the Thames aglitter, not only on the river side of the parapot but on the pavement side too. For this is high tide and the Thames is seeping through. The river was steady at a foot above road level for 30 minutes the Wellington's masts towards over the Embankment trees; and for 30 minutes river water gurgled along the Embankment gutters. Then, rapidly, the tide ebbed. The Wellington descended. And the pavements dried. December 31, 1951. (Photo by Daily Mail Contract Picture)
