During Operation Piranha on September 7 and 8, 1965, an LPH, 2 LSTS, and an AKA from the Amphibious Task Force were stationed offshore to aid US Marines and South Vietnamese troops in battling the Viet Cong. This photo captures the beachhead during the operation.
