A daughter of King Francis I of the Two Sicilies, Marie-Caroline married Charles Ferdinand, the duke of Berry, whose father became Charles X in 1824. Charles Ferdinand was assassinated four years before his father ascended the throne, and Marie-Caroline was forced to flee France when her father-in-law was overthrown in the July Revolution of 1830.
