Daylight at Last!' Henry Morton Stanley (1840-1904) born John Rowlands at Denbigh, Wales, Welsh-born American journalist and explorer. Stanley and his party emerging from a long trek of 160 days through the Congo jungle to relieve Emin Pasha (1840-1892). Born Eduard Schnitzer in Germany, Emin Pasha converted to Islam. A doctor and linguist, he added greatly to European knowledge of African languages. Illustration published in 'The Graphic' (London, 1890) a few months after Stanley's expedition ended in December 1889.
