Tiffany originally chose this group of objects to show examples of form, technique, and color that were not represented in the 1896 Havemeyer gift (96.17.9-.56). The coloration and patterning of Japanese lacquer incense boxes may have inspired this piece. The dark, rich ground evokes black lacquer, and the red and gold raised enamel decoration of a grasshopper, clover, and grasses references Japanese motifs associated with autumn.
