Thompson, Jr. (right) receives the Legion of Merit and the Silver Star medals from Rear Admiral James Pine, superintendent of the U. S. Coast Guard Academy, in ceremonies at the Academy, New London, Conn., on May 12, 1944. Citations were read from General Dwight D. Eisenhower and the late Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox, commending Commander Thompson's outstanding services while commanding a PC boat in the Sicilian campaign last July and August. Commander Thompson is the first Coast Guard officer to be decorated by both the Army and the Navy in this war. Commander Thompson's home is in Dorchester, Mass.
