This clay relief by Harry Bates shows Endymion conveyed in sleep to Mount Latmos. Endymion was a handsome shepherd-prince loved by the moon-goddess Selene. When Zeus offered him his choice of destinies, Endymion chose immortality and youth in eternal slumber. He was laid out in a cave on Mount Latmos in Karia (Caria) where his lunar lover would visit him each night. Harry Bates (1850 1899) was a Britishsculptor. He was elected to theRoyal Academyin 1892 as A.R.A. and was an active, if intermittent, member of theArt Workers Guild. He was a central figure in the British movement known asNew Sculpture.
