Cape Canaveral, Florida: July 21, 1960The first Polaris missiles are launched from the USS George Washington, the first of the nation's nuclear powered missile launching submarines, in the Atlantic Ocean about 30 miles off Cape Canaveral. The Polaris missile is a two-stage, solid-fuel, nuclear-armed, submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) built by the Lockheed Corporation.
