Cadet Tony. Army Cadet Tony Hope, 15, took French leave from school to attend an inspection by Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery. The next day his teacher gave him two strokes of the cane for being absent. Tony was one of 300 cadets selected from all over his county to form a guard of honour when Monty received the Freedom of the City of Durham. The Territorial Association asked the education authorities to give the chosen cadets the necessary time off school. Sunderland, South Shields and Gateshead agreed, said Tony's adjutant. Durham County - which controls Tony's school at Shiney Row - said "No." But Tony's mother told him: "You go - it is an honour." Tony went. At his home Tony said: "It was smashing to be inspected by Monty. I would have suffered half a dozen stroke: rather than miss it." Tony's headmaster, Mr. R.
