Button-Based Situla, 900-700 BC. Iran, Luristan, 9th-7th Century BC. Bronze, repoussé, punched, incised; diameter: 6.2 cm (2 7/16 in.); overall: 13.1 cm (5 3/16 in.). The metalworkers of Luristan provided the Assyrian empire with elaborate bronze ornaments and vessels. These two situla are decorated symmetrically---one with ibexes drinking from an overflowing water jar; the other, with sphinxes.
