British Antarctic Trek Ship -- This is the 849-ton Canadian Arctic seal-hunting ship Theron which will carry the advance party of the forthcoming British Antarctic Expedition on the 14,000 miles from London to the land of the South Pole. Equipment transported will include a pre-fabricated wooden hut, an Auster plane, and 24 husky dogs. How will the ship compare with Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance, crushed in the ice on a similar Antarctic voyage 41 years ago. Says deputy leader David Stratton; "She has every modern convenience strengthened steel bows, a 1,350 h.p. engine, radio and radar. We shall go down the Thomas looking like a Christmas tree, but we shall have all we need aboard." November 07, 1955.
