Britain declared war on Austria at midnight on 12th August 1914 and on the morning of 14th August, General John French (1852 - 1925), Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, arrived in Paris and was enthusiastically greeted by the crowd. On 17th August he proceeded by motor car to headquarters at the front. Date: 1914
