Togan began his artistic career in the studio of Kano Shoei (1519-1592) before turning attention to the works of Sesshu Toyo (1420-1506). He later proclaimed himself the third generation in Sesshu's line of descendants, and became one of the most admired of Momoyama-period ink painters.
