The Big Hole, Kimberley, South Africa - Kimberley, famous diamond centre of South Africa, has a unique tourist attraction in the form of a disused diamond mine, popularly known as "The Big Hole".Here the early diggers, working in the open with primitive equipment, excavated a gigantic crater 1,500 feet across and 1000 feet deep. Modern mining methods later extended the depth of the Big Hole to 4,000 feet, which during its life time yielded 15 million carats of diamonds valued at over £47,000,000.
